Huge amounts of OFGs, sugars and starches go down our kitchen and bathroom drains while washing utensils and bathing. Once in the drain line, they accumulate and corrode the pipes, creating foul odours and breeding grounds for insects and flies.
Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes. Harsh chemicals, soaps, solvents, physical cleaning using wires & rods simply aggravate the problem and make the clogs harder to remove. Mechanical routing and jetting can only provide a stop-gap solution as it pushes the clogs downstream.
For commercial food establishments, untreated OFG leads to drain overload, foul odours, and blockages resulting in costly repairs and penalties.
As a result, health and hygiene issues ultimately lead to customer dissatisfaction due to foul odours, unpleasant sights and can adversely affect business.
Septic tanks often turn troublesome due to overflows and require frequent pumping. If not treated quickly, it leads to choked systems, drain field failure, and unbearable odours.
For municipalities, sewerage is a major problem. OFGs discharged into sewers from food and commercial establishments; clog pipes, pumps, and downstream equipment, resulting in high operation and maintenance costs.
Over 90% of wastewater in developing countries is discharged into rivers and streams without any treatment! Once OFG enters the environment, it can rob surface waters of dissolved oxygen, leading to fish kills and eutrophication.
